''[[The Dark Knight Rises]]'' was the third film in what has since been called ''The Dark Knight Trilogy''.  It was released on July 20, 2012.  Most of the cast from the previous two films returned.  New cast members included Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, and Marion Cotillard Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul.  The film takes place eight years after ''The Dark Knight''.

''The Dark Knight Rises'' is also infamous for the 2012 Aurora, Colorado shooting.  At a midnight showing of the film at a Century movie theater, a gunman set off tear gas, and shot into the audience, killing 12 people, and injuring 70 others.  The gunman, who was later revealed to be James Eagan Holmes.  The shooting, like many other events similar in nature, sparked [[gun control]] debate.
