No, it never was. United States was founded as a secular nation rather than a Christian theocratic nation. You have to realize that the founding fathers who used to be devout Christians
became deist later life.The are even articles in Conservapedia
that admit that Americans was founded as a secular nation
AND that most of the founding fathers were deists.

found out that that is a lie that they taught me at school.

George Washington who was supposedly a devout Christian had
destroyed the the homes of many American tribes and also
founding fathers like Washington had immoral lifestyles.That
does not prove that the founding fathers were devout Christians.
