Box Hill, in the [[North Downs]] north-east of [[Dorking]], [[Surrey]], is a popular place of recreation for the people of south [[London]]. It has extensive views over the [[Weald]] to the [[South Downs]]. Its popularity as a resort has lasted for at least two c3enturies, as it was the scene of a pic-nic party in the novel [[''Emma'']] by [[Jane Austen]]. The crest of the hill contains a number of Second Worls War fortifications, as the hill commands the strategic [[Mole Gap]], which contains road and rail connections between London and the south coast.
