As dawn broke on 14 June, the British soldiers controlled almost all the remaining high ground around Port Stanley. The 2nd Battalion Scots Guards were on Mount Tumbledown, the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment were on Wireless Ridge and the Gurkhas had just taken Mount William. This just left Sapper Hill, which was supposed to be the objective of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, but after the losses on the RFA Sir Galahad, the Welsh Guards were severely reduced in numbers. Alpha and Charlie Companies from 40 Commando were sent to join them on 10 June to bring the battalion up to strength.

On the night of the 13/14 June this composite battalion were to be on standby for the British attacks on Mounts Tumbledown and William, before moving towards Sapper Hill shortly after these objectives were taken. During the approach to Sapper Hill, they became bogged down in a minefield, which cost them two wounded.
