John's first epistle records an example of false prophets and false teachers, who, in effort to seduce the faithful, formed a kind of esoteric group, believing also that they had superior knowledge to ordinary Christians. They are considered to be forerunners of the later heretics generally known as "Gnostics" who claimed a special knowledge of God and of theology. On the basis of their new doctrine they appear to have denied that Jesus was the Christ, the pre-existent Son of God who had come in the flesh to provide salvation for men.
