The Hebrew word "Almah", "עלמה" actually translates to a young, marriageable woman who is still under the protection of her family. So, the NRSV translators seem to actually be translating Isaiah 7:14 more accurately. But I'm no expert. [[User:NP|NP]]

:At the time KJV was produced, the idea of translating from the original languages was controversial. Translating from Hebrew meant relying on rabbis for linguistic aid. The educated elite of Europe used Latin, and the Vulgate was translated from Greek rather than from Hebrew. Both the Vulgate and the Septuagint use "virgin."<br/>Biblical quotations in the New Testament are generally from the Septuagint rather than from the Hebrew. So the Apostles seem to have regarded the Septuagint as scripture. Ancient Hebrew does not have vowel marks, so translators must rely on the marks added by the Masoretic scholars. The Masoretic text that NRSV uses was compiled around AD 700. The Septuagint is about a thousand years older. [[User:PeterKa|PeterKa]] ([[User talk:PeterKa|talk]]) 14:07, 13 November 2017 (EST)

:In translating this word as "virgin" KJV follows the Vulgate (Latin) and the Septuagint (Greek) versions of the passage. Biblical quotations in the New Testament are generally from the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew. NRSV follows the Masoretic text, which was compiled around AD 700. It is likely that earlier Hebrew manuscripts varied widely. The Septuagint is almost a thousand years older than the Masoretic and was presumably supported by Hebrew manuscripts that circulated in ancient times.
