A native of [[Oklahoma City]], [[Oklahoma]], Powell graduated from North Rankin High School in Flowood in Rankin County]] and Mississippi State University at Starkville.  Since 2005, he has been a broker for Statement Properties in Brandon. He is also the president of Mid-South Forest Products and a director for Powell Petroleum Oil and Gas.
