The '''Lake Wobegon effect''' is a [[cognitive bias]] in which people tend to overestimate their achievements and capabilities relative to those of others. It is named after the fictional town of Lake Wobegon, [[Minnesota]], created by [[Garrison Keillor]], in which all of the children are [[Average#An_example_of_average.2C_median.2C_and_mode|above average]] (which, of course, is impossible). As an example, nearly two-thirds of American drivers rate themselves as "excellent" or "very good" drivers. A subset of the Lake Wobegon effect is the [[Dunning-Kruger effect]], in which someone mistakenly believes themselves to have a certain competency precisely because they do not.
