'''Farley Mowat''' (b. 1921) was a Canadian naturalist who conducted the first scientific field study of [[wolf]] behavior. He discovered that "a good many scientifically established beliefs about wolves" were contradicted by his own observations. (NCW, page 85)
His book ''Never Cry Wolf'' (herein NCW) details his arctic expedition. Aided by two Eskimos named Mike and Ootek, he discovered that wolves were not responsible for the decimation of the Keewatin [[caribou]] herd complained of by white hunters. While human hunters shoot the big, healthy fat caribou, wolves "eat the sick and the weak and the small caribou" (Page 85)
