Born in [[Alexandria, Louisiana|Alexandria]] in Rapides Parish, Shapiro was one of five children of Morris Shapiro (1910-2005) and the former Mary Fern Clyde (1915-1996). Morris Schapiro was one one of three Alexandria city attorneys during the administration of former [[Mayor]] [[John K. Alfred Shapiro graduated in 1960 from Alexandria's oldest public high school, Bolton High School, at which he played [[football]]. He then earned from [[Louisiana State University]] in Baton Rouge a  [[Bachelor of Arts]] degree in [[political science]] and a [[Juris Doctor]]ate from the LSU Law Center. He was a member for fifty years of the Louisiana Bar Association. Alfred and Kristina Shaprio had a daughter, Melissa Lea Lopoo, the wife of Len Lopoo, and a son, David Bruce Shapiro, who predeceased his father. There are two grandchildren. He had two living sisters, Gayle Shapiro Martin and Cynthia Shapiro. Shapiro died at the age of seventy-five and is interred at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Baton Rouge.<ref name=obit/>
