General Eisenhower proclaimed, "By rushing out from his fixed defenses the enemy may give us the chance to turn his great gamble into his worst defeat. So I call upon every man, of all the Allies, to rise now to new heights of courage ... with unshakable faith in the cause for which we fight, we will, with God's help, go forward to our greatest victory." This battle was the largest ever fought by the U.S. Army. Nearly 600,000 American Soldiers alone fought in this historic battle.

The infamous massacre of American soldiers by Joachim Peiper's 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte occured during the Battle of the Bulge on December 17th. Taken prisoner by the panzer division near Malmedy, 71 men from Battery B of the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion were gunned down and clubbed to death in a nearby field. Twenty-one men survived to testify about the massacre by playing dead or escaping. The conservative talk-show host Bill O'Reilly has on two separate occasions stated on his show that it was American troops who had massacred German troops at Malmedy in his defense of American atrocities in Iraq.<ref>http://mediamatters.org/items/200606030002</ref>
