Quayle was the first chairman of the National Space Council and the head of the Council on Competitiveness. Compared to the next few Vice Presidents, [[Al Gore]] and [[Dick Cheney]], Dan Quayle had a limited role in policymaking because he was viewed as a political liability after being portrayed by a buffoon in the media.
