The films were released annually in cinemas from December 2001 to 2003. DVD releases of the cinema version and Special Extended Editions have also been released for each film. Each extended edition includes four discs, two of bonus material.
The Lord of the Rings film trilogy received universal acclaim from critics and fans alike. Some even cited it as "the Star Wars Trilogy for Millennials". The trilogy has 30 Oscar nominations, winning 17 of them. One of them being Best Picture, which was won by ''The Return of the King'' at the 76th Academy Awards in 2004. ''The Return of the King'' is also the only film in the series cinematic history that won every Oscar it was nominated for, 11 in all.
