Why can't people, who happen to live in oil rich places, just get along?

The middle east was not particularly unstable during its long years of Ottoman dominance (positively tranquil compared to Europe in the same period), or even in the interwar period - it's current reputation as a problematic area postdates the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia in 1938.  Texas and Alaska are obviously stable, and the North Sea area is not noted as a hotbed of agitation.
