Reverend Tilton was saved in 1969, and began an iterant ministry in 1974. Reverent Tilton preached to small congregations and revivals throughout Texas and Oklahoma in the form of a Word-Faith ministry often preached by ministers like [[Kenneth Hagin]]. In 1976, Reverend Tilton and his family settled in Dallas, Texas and built the Word of Faith Family Church in nearby Farmers Branch, Texas.  The congregation of believers started small, but grew steadily.  Reverend Tilton tried unsuccessfully to begin a media ministry.  His efforts were fruitless until he went on a secluded vacation and experienced seclusion and enlightenment akin to Jesus' forty days in the wilderness.  Reverend Tilton felt called by God to purchase half-hour blocks on local television within which to broadcast his ministry to a wide audience of Christians.
