With 36 Republican members retiring from the House, Democrats won many open seats and took control of the chamber. [[Nancy Pelosi]] again became Speaker of the House. Democrats gained 40 seats total. One race in North Carolina's 9th District is still undecided. Democrats also gained 7 Governorships, including a sweep of the upper midwest.
