A '''Nocturne''' is a form of instrumental music developed in the 19th century and most commonly associated with the piano. The name means 'of the night' and is generally used to refer to a slow, dream-like piece.

The earliest pieces called Nocturnes were written by the pianist and composer [[John Field]] - [[Chopin]] was inspired by these to create perhaps the most famous examples in the 1830s and 1840s.

Other well known Nocturnes have been created by [[Grieg]], [[Debussy]] and [[Benjamin Britten]].
