The Milton Bradley version is comprised of 100 squares numbered accordingly, players move alternatively from left to right then from right to left, from 1 (bottom left) to 100 (top left), rolling a single die numbered 1 to 6.  The first player to reach square 100 on an exact roll is the winner.

Movement is helped by a series of ladders (upward movement) and hindered by a series of chutes (downward movement).  A player landing on the bottom square of a ladder moves up to the top of the ladder; a player landing on the top square of a chute moves down to the bottom of the chute.  (A player landing on the top of a ladder or the bottom of a chute does not move further.)  The Milton Bradley version uses the ladders/chutes squares to teach morality, and the rewards of good behavior<ref>For example, square 4 shows a boy reading a book at the bottom of the ladder; square 14 at the top of the ladder shows him graduating.</ref> or the consequences of bad behavior<ref>For example, square 47 shows a boy fishing in a NO FISHING spot at the top of the chute; square 26 at the bottom of the chute shows him being kicked off the property.</ref>.
