The city was founded in 1848 after the settlers of the 1843 [[Fort Bulnes]] moved a bit to the north.
During late 19th Century and Early 20th Century, the city was a destiny for every navigator who wanted to pass from the [[Atlantic Ocean]] to the [[Pacific Ocean]] since the only way at the time was to go around South America. The city lost importance and visitors since the [[Panama Canal]] was made.
The city was very distinct from the other Chilean cities, it was settled by many European immigrants including [[Croats]], [[British]], [[Spaniards]], [[Italians]], [[Germans]] and [[Serbs]] as well as a big influence from the Chilean islanders of the [[Chiloé|Chiloé Archipelago]]. To this day the European influence is visible in the Neo-Classical Architecture and many Croat last names.
Today the city is an important connection between [[South America]] and [[Antarctica]] since there are flights regularly, and Chile has an important presence in the last one.
Punta Arenas is also visited since the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region is located in [[Patagonia]], a place that has unique landscapes perfect for trekking, specially in the National Parks that are near.
