'''Tannaim''' (Aramaic plural '''תנאים''', singular '''תנא''' Tanna, "repeaters", "teachers", one who studies or teaches) were the Jewish Rabbinic Sages of the period from [[Hillel]] to [[Judah ha-Nasi]], from approximately 30 B.C. to A.D. 220. They were both scholars ''and'' teachers who educated Jews in the synagogues and in the academies. Their [[opinion]]s and rulings were recorded, compiled and redacted finally in the [[Mishnah]] around A.D. 200. They flourished for 210 years from A.D. 10–220. The Mishna, is accorded canonical status in Judaism and forms the basis for all subsequent rabbinic discussions.
