::Is rugby comparable to American football? American footballers wear body armor and helmets, rugby players don't. The rules are completely different too. The similarities are superficial. [[User:Auld Nick|Auld Nick]] 07:31, 13 May 2007 (EDT)

'''Rugby''' is commonly known as '''Football''' in the UK, Australia and New Zealand (in the UK it shares that name with soccer and is perhaps overshadowed by the more popular game). The '''Rugby Football Union''' is the governing body of Rugby Football in the UK.

In Canada Rugby Football evolved into Canadian Football. Both in the US and Canada the respective modern forms of Football have their origin in Rugby Football. Rugby refers to the place the game's laws were successfully set down (a school in England). There were many versions of what is now Rugby Football. One of the founding clubs of the English Football Association was a Rugby Club. They decided not to remain in the FA due to the lack of carrying the ball.

In the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland, football refers to Rugby League (a slightly different version of Rugby Football). Rugby players wear some minimal body armour and in recent years head protection. Despite the very heavy tackling and the likelihood of being knocked to the ground Rugby players do not wear any where near the padding of American Football. Despite the recent change of name in Australia of the Soccer Association to the Football Federation to say Football to an Aussie will mean Rugby or [[Australian Rules Football]], never Soccer.
