Zion was one of the original hills upon which [[Jerusalem]] was built. Later the name began to apply to all of Jerusalem, and then to the Jewish religion itself, and finally to the modern movement ([[Zionism]]) to reestablish Palestine as the Jewish homeland.

[[David]] initially captured Zion, named it the Citadel of David,<ref>II Samuel 5:7</ref>, and rendered it sacred by bringing the [[Ark]] to Zion.
