In the context of [[marriage]], an '''annulment''' is a legal proceeding whereby one or both parties seek to have the marriage ended.
An annulment differs from [[divorce]] on two grounds:
*An annulment, if granted, means legally the marriage never existed in the first place; a divorce means a legal marriage is dissolved.
*A divorce can be granted for any or no reason; an annulment is limited to specific grounds stated in the law (e.g. a marriage entered into by fraud, such as a woman marrying a man who says he is divorced, only to learn later that he is still married).
