It was the end of salutary neglect which started the conflicts between the colonists and the King of England, and led to the Revolutionary War and American independence.  In 1775, the Irish-born British statesman Edmund Burke was a member of the England's parliament and he gave a speech there lamenting the end of "salutary neglect" in the colonies, which was a term he first coined.  Burke was one of the few in England who sympathized with the colonists in America and even supported the American Revolution.
