==Hippolytus, bishop and martyr==

'''Saint Hippolytus''' (3rd century)—often confused with [[Hippolytus of Rome]] (died A.D. 235)—according to the [[Roman Martyrology]] on August 22, was bishop of Porto, Italy, who was put to death for his faith either there or at Ostia during the reign of Emperor Alexander. He is often confused with the Hippolytus (mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on August 13) of St. Lawrence's unreliable ''Acta'' (not written by Lawrence), which names him the officer in charge of Lawrence's imprisonment who was baptized by Lawrence, was brought before the Emperor when he attended the saint's funeral, and was then scourged and torn apart by horses at the order of the Emperor. At the same time Hippolytus' nurse, Concordia, and nineteen other Christians of his household were beaten to death with leaden whips.
