Donald James Larsen, known as Don Larsen (August 7, 1929 – January 1, 2020) was an American professional baseball pitcher. In October 1956, he pitched a
perfect game for the New York Yankees in the fifth game of the World Series.
Larsen was born in Michigan City, Indiana, and moved with his family to San Diego, California. , where he went to Point Loma High Scho, at which he played baseball and basketball. He was initially signed in 1953 by the St. Louis Browns. After two minor league seasons, he entered the United States Army for two years. He returned to the Browns, who moved in 1954 to Baltimore, Maryland. He joined the Yankees in 1955. After the 1959 season ended, the Yankees traded Larsen to Kansas City in an arrangement that brought to the Yankees Roger Eugene Maris (1934-1985), who broke Babe Ruth's home-run record, hitting sixty-one home runs in 1961. After a single season in Kansas City, Larsen played for five other teams until he retired after fourteen seasons with a losing career recordd. The New York Times called him an "otherwise ordinary pitcher" who "for one day in 1956 was the picture of perfection."
Larsen died on New Years Day 2020 in a hospice in Hayden Lake in Kootenai County in northern Idaho. He had undergone unsuccessful radiation for esophageal cancer.
