The article should be revised to point out that Phyllis and her husband (Fred) both joined the John Birch Society in the summer of 1959, after attending a JBS recruitment meeting in Chicago. Phyllis acknowledged her JBS membership in a letter she wrote in December 1959 to Verne Kaub of the American Council of Christian Laymen (ACCL). That letter appears in the ACCL archives at the Wisconsin Historical Society.  In addition, in February 1960, Robert Welch described Phyllis in that month's ''JBS Bulletin'' as '''"a very loyal member of the John Birch Society".'''

In addition, the personal papers of JBS National Council member Thomas J. Anderson contain correspondence by JBS founder Robert Welch which explains why Phyllis decided to resign from the Birch Society in 1964. For some unknown reason, Phyllis was never willing to candidly acknowledge her JBS membership -- even when directly asked about it by her two biographers (Dr. Donald Critchlow and Carol Felsenthal).
