In studying the organization and history of the CCP, one glaring contrast with the totalitarian regimes of Hitler and Stalin stands out: the only armed opposition to Hitler and Stalin came from within the ranks of the military. The [[Great Purges]] of the late 1930s were to weed out opposition to Stalin in the military and it was the military that tried to kill Hitler in [[Operation Walkure]] in 1944. One of the biggest enduring Hollywood myths is that both Hitler and Stalin were supreme dictators with a blind military following. Such was never true as both German and Russian patriots always existed in both the German and Soviet military who primary allegiance was to their homeland, and not a political party.

The People's Liberation Army, is an armed wing of a political party and not of the state.  Mao built it this way to avoid the problems Hitler and Stalin encountered, indeed this is one of the primary distinctions that separates Maoism from traditional Marxist-Leninism.  To organize opposition against the party within the military among patriots to the homeland is an extremely difficult and risky thing, even moreso than in the German and Soviet experiences. Yet if a reform movement were ever to take shape, it remains one of humanity's only hopes, given the unlikely chance of the people of China ever being liberated from communist enslavement by regime change by forces outside of China.
