Goodacre was encouraged at an early age by her parents, [[real estate]] developers Homer Glen and Melba Maxey, to pursue her love and talent for art. After Monterey High School in Lubbock, she graduated in 1961 from Colorado College , a liberal arts institution in [[Colorado Springs]], at which she met her husband, William Goodacre, by whom she had two children, Tim Goodacre and Jill Connick, the wife of entertainer Harry Connick, Jr. Upon graduation, she returned to Lubbock to begin her career as a prolific painter in addition to being a wife, cook, and hostess. In 1974, she moved to Boulder, [[Colorado]].<ref name=obit/>
Goodacre and her first husband divorced in 1983, and she moved to Santa Fe, where her family had long had a cabin on the Pecos River.. In 1995, she married the [[Dallas]] [[attorney]] C. L. "Mike" Schmidt; they remained together until her death at the age of eighty. A street near the campus of [[Texas Tech University]] in Lubbock is named in Goodacre's honor.
