The Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 and is an organization for girls in the United States The GS program developed from the progressive movement in the United States from people who sought to promote the social welfare of young women and as a female counterpart to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912.

It is a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
The progressive movement continues to have an influence in the GSUSA. There is no policy of discrimination against lesbian leaders or scouts, and the word "God" in the oath may be swapped with any substitute word the girl sees fit. <ref>http://www.bsa-discrimination.org/html/gsusa.html#statement</ref>
