The Cardinals played against the [[Pittsburgh Steelers]] in [[Super Bowl XLIII]] on February 1, 2009, losing 23 to 27.
Its history dates back to 1898 and in 1920 were one of the original franchises of what is now the NFL as the Chicago Cardinals. In Chicago they one one NFL championship (1947) but generally were a poor performing team.
Unable to compete against the more successful cross-town rival [[Chicago Bears]], the team relocated to St. Louis in 1960, keeping their nickname (not to be confused with the more successful baseball team of the same name). The team did not much better there, advancing to the playoffs only thrice and never hosting or winning any games.
Facing poor attendance and an aging stadium (and unwillingness on the city's part to build another multi-purpose stadium), the team relocated to Phoenix in 1988, being called the Phoenix Cardinals until taking its current name in 1994. However, though the team has had somewhat better success than in Chicago or St. Louis, it has not translated into many playoff victories. The team has made one Super Bowl appearance against the [[Pittsburgh Steelers]] in [[Super Bowl XLIII]] on February 1, 2009, losing 23 to 27.
