Kurfiss was the daughter of John M. Gore (1846-1920), who was fifty-nine when she was born, and the former Anna Marie Frietzsche (1871-1926), who died when Marion was twenty-one. In 1924, already married to John Frederick Kurfiss, II (1901-1959), she worked at the age of nineteen in the Calvin Coolidge presidential campaign sending out mailers though she was too young to vote in the election, held only four years after passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In Louisiana, she remained a Republican activist so highly regarded that the party named in her honor, the Marion Gore Kurfiss Award to the "best all-around club" of the federation. Bette Kurfiss was a Roman Catholic eucharistic minister and a long-term tennis enthusiast who from 1979 to 1981 was the tennis coordinator for Holy Savior Menard Central High School on Coliseum Boulevard in Alexandria. Despite Marion's Republican affiliation, John and Bette Kurfiss were Democrats.
