'''Quinacrine''', also known as mepacrine or acrichine, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as acridines. These are organic compounds containing the acridine moiety, a linear tricyclic heterocycle which consists of two benzene rings joined by a pyridine ring. Quinacrine is used as a treatment for [[malaria]], and as an antibiotic. Quinacrine is mostly known for its failure in drug trials for [[transmissible spongiform encephalopathy]] diseases. It is a small molecule drug, and was shown in lab tests to slow down or stop [[prion]] misfolding. However, in humans, the same effect was not observed. In addition, it caused liver issues in prion disease patients. It is used to treat giardiasis, a protozoal infection of the intestinal tract, and certain types of lupus erythematosus.
