PrP<sup>res</sup>, also known as PrPSc, is a [[prion]] [[isoform]] of [[PrP]], or PrPc. It is the sole cause of [[transmissible spongiform encephalopathy]]. The name comes from 'prion protein resistant', meaning it is resistant to [[proteinase K]]. PrPres is able to convert healthy PrPc into copies of itself. These prions are neurotoxic.
