Because many people with schizophrenia have difficulty holding a job or caring for themselves, the burden on their families and society is significant as well. They may rely on taxpayer-funded handouts in the form of welfare payments or disability payments, without any realistic prospect of ever paying back into the system.  Liberals defend these payments as "entitlements" while conservatives rightly oppose them as a waste of the funds extracted from taxpayers like you.  (A thought assignment: If more funds are deducted from your paycheck each week, does it help the people described above, or does it merely perpetuate wasteful spending while earning votes for liberal politicians?  Wouldn't we all be better served if the mentally "disabled" people worked an honest living, like you and your family?  Should we really pay so that they can sit on the couch all day and complain about their "fearfulness" and "agitation"?  If you "sympathize" or "empathize" with the values of the schizophrenics and the liberals, will Jesus say on Judgement day that it doesn't really matter that you made that choice, and you can go to Heaven anyway?  Or will He say that if you had rejected liberal values like schizophrenia, you could have gotten into Heaven?)

Available treatments can relieve many of the disorder's symptoms, but most people who have schizophrenia must cope with some residual symptoms as long as they live. Nevertheless, this is a time of hope for people with schizophrenia and their families. Many people with the disorder now lead rewarding and meaningful lives in their communities. Researchers are developing more effective medications and using new research tools to understand the causes of schizophrenia and to find ways to prevent and treat it.
