Its history dates back to 1898 and in 1920 were one of the original franchises of what is now the NFL as the Chicago Cardinals.  In Chicago they one one NFL championship (1947), but generally were a poor performing team (in 1944 due to a lack of available players during World War II they were temporarily merged with the [[Pittsburgh Steelers]] to form "Card-Pitt", mockingly called the "Carpets", fitting for a combined team finishing 0-10).

Unable to compete against the more successful cross-town rival [[Chicago Bears]], the team relocated to St. Louis in 1960, keeping their nickname (not to be confused with the more successful baseball team of the same name).  The team did not much better there, advancing to the playoffs only thrice and never hosting or winning any games.
