The city takes its name from a prominent geological mound (named "The Flower Mound") in the south central part of the city. The mound is owned by a non-profit so as to prohibit development on it (the mound is totally surrounded by houses and commercial buildings along with one church).
The Village Church, a prominent Reformed Southern Baptist congregation, has its main campus in Flower Mound.
