Eugene Talmadge (September 23, 1884 – December 21, 1946) was a Democrat white supremacist from Georgia who served as the state's governor from 1933–37 and 1941–43. Similar to Louisiana governor and demagogue Huey Long, he divided the state's party into being either for or against him. Term-limited in 1936 from running for re-election as governor, Talmadge unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 1936 against segregationist Richard Russell, Jr., a New Dealer.

Talmadge was described by his son Herman as someone who a third of Georgians would follow him to hell and who a third wanted in hell.
