Early in the game Bartz, Reina, Galuf and Faris meet and realize that they must save the planet which is being threatened by man taking advantage of the "crystals", which control the four elements ([[earth]], [[fire]], [[wind]] and [[water]]). The crystals eventually break because their energy has been drained by human technology. After each crystal breaks, its element either becomes polluted or weakened.
