The Mycenaean language existed in the eastern [[Mediterranean]] region among the [[Mycenae]] people, from about 1400 to 100 B.C. (during the [[Bronze Age]]). The language has been lost and is no longer spoken.

The Mycenaean language existed in the eastern [[Mediterranean]] region among the Bronze Age [[Mycenaens]], (who called themselves Achaeans) an Indo-European people who arrived in Greece and the Aegean about 2000BC. They formed a culture - the first civilization on mainland Europe - starting about 1650BC. The civilization, and with it literacy, disappeared between 1100BC and 1000BC in the great disruptions caused by the movement of what are called the "Sea Peoples" throughout the area The language has been lost and is no longer spoken, however its writing, known as Linear B, was deciphered in 1953, and shows the language to have been a form of Greek.
