At one time it was the dominant party in Israel, having led or been in the ruling coalition.  However, in 1977 it suffered its first major defeat to the [[Likud]]-led coalition, and in recent years it has significantly reduced in prominence, usually having to enter into electoral alliances to gain seats in the Knesset.  However, in the 2021 elections it once again joined the ruling coalition.
