In the late afternoon, combat aircraft from both sides intervened, starting with two [[Argentinian Navy]] MB-339's and two IA-58 Pucaras which attacked D Company. One of the Navy jets was brought down by a Royal Marine shoulder-launched Blowpipe, and minutes later the Pucaras dropped napalm with one shot down by small arms fire. Then three Royal Air Force (RAF) Harrier GR.3's brought much needed relief by silencing the radar-guided 35mm anti-aircraft guns at Goose Green Point with cluster bombs and rockets.

During the action at Goose Green airbase two naval Aeromacchis from Stanley attacked D Company and one of them was shot down by a Blowpipe missile at 4.36 pm. The jet crashed, and its pilot (Lieutenant Daniel Enrique Miguel) was killed. Shortly after 5 pm two Pucaras attacked British troops near the airbase. The second Pucara was caught in a blizzard of small arms fire, which caused the Argentinian pilot (Lieutenant Miguel Antonio Cruzado) to eject among British troops and was taken prisoner.

The RAF Harriers had been misidentified by two patrolling Sea Harriers piloted by Lieutenant-Commander Nigel Ward and Flight Lieutenant Ian Mortimer of 801 Royal Navy Air Squadron (RNAS), and were very nearly shot down during their bombing run.
