Interestingly, during the American Revolutionary War Lancaster served as a temporary capital of the United States (for one day, September 27, 1777, when [[Philadelphia]] fell to the British).  The only order of business by the [[Continental Congress]] was to elect [[Benjamin Franklin]] to negotiate a treaty with [[France]]; the Congress determined that Lancaster was too vulnerable to serve as a capital (being only 60 miles away) whereupon they relocated to York (some 20 miles further away).
