Obama rose to prominence as an Illinois state senator who was invited to give the 2004 Democratic Party Nomination Convention Keynote Speech. Gloria Borger of CNN broadcast to the nation that Obama was a "Kenyan economist" running for the U.S. Senate in 2004. In the most memorable line of the speech, Obama said,
