It's often compared to colonialism, where an outside entity claims their own language and culture is "problematic" and thus needs to be changed by the "benevolent" outsiders. The irony of this, coming from the same people who claim to be [[anticolonialism]] isn't lost on them, either.

 

A variation called '''Filipinx''' ("fili-pinks" or "Filipin-X") has also been used to describe the Filipino community, which uses similar gendered language (owing to also having a history of Spanish colonialism). Likewise, this term is met with widespread ridicule by Filipinos for the same reasons.
