Early in the game Bartz, Reina, Galuf and Faris meet and realize that they must save the planet which is being threatened by Exdeath, a knight-like entity that was originally a tree tainted by demon ensealment, taking advantage of the "crystals", which control the four elements ([[earth]], [[fire]], [[wind]] and [[water]]) in an attempt at unleashing an arcane spell known as the void which destroys all of existence. The crystals eventually break because their energy has been drained by human technology. After each crystal breaks, its element either becomes polluted or weakened.
