It is remarkable for its high standard of living, made possible to a great extent by the absence of a national army.

It is remarkable for having one of the highest standards of living in the region, including very low mortality rates. Part of its fame comes as a result of its demilitarised status - it was the first state in the world to abolish its national army by constitutional decree, in the New Constitution of 1949.
