mLine 1:
Line 1: − "The Prince" is an essay regarding how to acquire and control a state. He provides accurate discussion on which methods to employ and why, and which methods of war/control would be foolish to use. He provides historically accurate details to support his position as well. Machiavelli does not portray war and maintenance of a state to be a bed of roses, so to speak, which benefits the reader by laying out the honest truth of tactics that must be employed to control a state. Therefore, his statements sometimes sound cruel and harsh, however if you consider them before an instant dismissal, then you will be surprised to learn that every succesful military power has used them including every President of the United States. Machiavelli is often referred to as the devil and conniving, however this only occurs when the people who use this reference are ignorant of his teachings and quote him out of context.+

Niccolo Machiavelli (1469 A.D.-1527 A.D.) wrote "[[Prince, The|The Prince]]," which is an account of government in which the "end justifies the means" (a ruler can use any means to gain power and rule his state). Historians consider Machiavelli to have been the thinker who laid the foundations for the [[Age of Revolution]].

Even today the term "Machiavellian" is used to describe a politician who spends all his time and effort on getting ahead and manipulating other people for his own gain.
