After his aunt and uncle were murdered by Stormtroopers seeking C-3PO and R2-D2, Luke wanted to "learn the ways of The Force and become a [[Jedi]] like my father."<ref>[[Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope]]</ref> He soon was caught up in the Rebel Alliance, and after help from Kenobi's Force ghost, Luke destroyed the first Death Star.  For the next few years, Luke would help the Rebels fight the Empire.  However, the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi would tell him to go to the Dagobah system to train under Yoda.  Luke would begin training under Yoda, but when he sensed his friends were in danger on the planet Bespin, he left to help them.  This resulted in a duel with Darth Vader in which Luke would lose his right hand, his lightsaber (which also belonged to his father), and ultimately learn his parentage - he was Darth Vader's son.  Vader would try to convince Luke to join him, but he refused.  After being rescued, Luke would received a robotic hand, and begin training once again.  He would fashion himself a new lightsaber, just in time to save Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt.  Afterward, he would go back to Dagobah, where Yoda told him his training was complete.  However, he would not truly become a Jedi until he defeated Vader.  He would also learn that he had a twin sister - Leia.  Luke regrouped with the Rebel Fleet, and went with Han and Leia to Endor.  Luke would try to convince his father to come back to the Light Side of the Force, which resulted in a second duel on the Death Star II.  Although Luke defeated Vader, he refused to turn to the Dark Side.  This resulted in the Emperor unleashing Force Lightning on Luke.  Unable to see his son in agony, Vader would turn on the Emperor, throwing him down a shaft in the Death Star II.  By this act, Darth Vader was no more, and Anakin Skywalker was reborn.  In Anakin's final moments, he asked Luke to remove his helmet, so that, just for once, he could see him with his own eyes.  Anakin said that Luke was right about him, before dying, once again embracing the Light Side of the Force.  Luke took his father's armor and cremated it.  That night, during the Victory Celebration, he saw the Force Ghosts of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and his father, Anakin Skywalker, redeemed from the Dark Side after 24 years.
