The wreck was found on September 1, 1985 at 41°46′ N 50°14′ W, under 13,000 feet of water, by an American/French team led by Dr. [[Robert Ballard]] of Woods Hole Institute and Jean-Louis Michel of Ifremer.  Remote submersibles photographed the wreckage, which was in two pieces lying upright, confirming some witness accounts of the ship breaking in two at the surface.  Further explorations by Ballard and Ifremer could not find evidence of a long gash caused by the iceberg and cited on the original reports; instead it was postulated that a series of rivet popping combined with separation of seams and brittle fracturing in the hull plating allowed the water to rush in.

== Federal Reserve Conspiracy ==
 +
Author G.Edward Griffin has brought to light that the sinking of the Titanic was a conspiracy by a number of powerful bankers in support of the Federal Reserve act to silence a number of wealthy and politically influential Americans who were opposed to the act. This act by extension would further distance the United States of America from the gold standard. A group of bankers which included J.P Morgan met on Jekyll Island to formulate the plot. A number of wealthy Americans who were opponents to the Federal Reserve act including Jacob Aster, Benjamin Guggenheim and Isidor Straus were invited onto and aboard the Titanic when it sank. J.P Morgan was supposed to join them on the Titanic's maiden voyage but cancelled his ticket the day before. Curiously no red (rescue) flares were aboard the Titanic to signal boats for rescue, only white (party) flares that would signal everything was OK. <ref>The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve,  G.
